How To Lay Artificial Turf

Artificial turf has quickly become a popular choice for home and business owners looking for a low-maintenance lawn option. It performs year-round without any watering or mowing and requires little to no maintenance to keep it looking lush and green.

If you’re thinking about installing artificial turf in your home, read on to learn more about the installation process and the benefits.

Step 1. Prepare the Area

  • Remove Existing Turf: Clear the area where you want to install the artificial turf. This involves removing any existing grass, roots, rocks or debris.
  • Excavate the Surface: Dig the area to a depth of about 70-100 mm below the adjoining surface to create a suitable base for the turf.

Step 2. Create a Solid Base

  • Apply Crushed Rock: Spread a 50-70 mm layer of crushed rock over the area. This acts as a support base and assists with drainage.
  • Compact the Base: Wet the crushed rock and then compact it using a vibrating plate or hand tamper.

Step 3. Level with Crusher Dust

  • Apply Crusher Dust: On top of the crushed rock, add a 20-40 mm layer of crusher dust, which provides a smooth surface.
  • Compact and Level: Ensure the crusher dust is levelled and compacted for a smooth finish.

Step 4. Lay the Artificial Turf

  • Roll Out the Turf: Carefully lay out the synthetic grass over the prepared surface. If using multiple pieces, ensure they are laid in the same direction.
  • Trim and Adjust: Trim any excess turf using a sharp utility knife.

Step 5. Secure the Joins

  • Use Joining Tape: If you have multiple pieces of turf, use joining tape to secure them together. Make sure the joins are tight and invisible.
  • Secure with Nails or U-Pins: Place nails or U-pins at intervals along the joins to keep them in place.

Step 6. Final Touches

  • Trim Edges: Carefully trim the edges of the turf to fit your area.
  • Secure Perimeter: Use nails or U-pins around the edges of the turf, spacing them about 200 mm apart.
  • Apply Silica Sand: Spread dry silica sand over the turf and brush it in. This helps the grass stand up and adds weight to keep the turf in place.

Step 7. Maintenance and Enjoyment

  • Regular Cleaning: Keep your artificial turf clean by removing debris and lightly rinsing with water.
  • Enjoy Your Lawn: Now that your artificial turf is installed, enjoy the low-maintenance beauty it adds to your space.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Shovel, rake, wheelbarrow
  • Vibrating plate or hand tamper
  • Utility knife
  • Crushed rock & crusher dust
  • Synthetic turf & joining tape
  • Nails or U-pins
  • Silica sand
  • Stiff broom or power broom

Tips and Considerations

  • Direction of Turf: Lay the turf so that the blades face towards the primary viewing angle for the best appearance.
  • Sharp Blades: Always use sharp blades when cutting turf to ensure clean cuts.
  • Weather Considerations: Try to lay the turf on a sunny day, as this helps the blades stand up naturally.

The Benefits of Artificial Turf

Artificial turf offers a range of advantages that make it an increasingly popular choice for residential gardens, commercial landscapes and sports fields. Here are some key benefits:

Low Maintenance: Unlike natural grass, artificial turf doesn't require regular watering, mowing or fertilising. This can save significant time and resources, particularly in regions with water restrictions or for those seeking a low-maintenance garden solution.

Year-Round Aesthetic Appeal: Artificial grass remains green and lush throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. This consistent beauty is a major draw for those who want an evergreen lawn without the seasonal fluctuations of natural grass.

Durability and Longevity: High-quality artificial turf can last for many years, resisting wear and tear much better than natural grass. This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas, playgrounds and pet zones.

Water Conservation: With no need for watering, artificial turf is an eco-friendly option that helps conserve water, an important consideration in drought-prone areas.

Safe and Allergen-Free: Artificial turf doesn't harbour allergens like natural grass can, making it a good choice for people with allergies. It often comes with padded underlay, which provides a safer surface for sports and play.

Pest-Free and Non-Toxic: Unlike natural lawns, artificial turf doesn't attract pests like insects and rodents. Also, it eliminates the need for potentially harmful pesticides and fertilisers.

How Much Does Artificial Turf Cost?

The cost of artificial turf can vary widely depending on several factors:

Quality of the Turf: Higher-end artificial grass, which looks more realistic and lasts longer, will be more expensive. The quality of materials and the technology used in manufacturing significantly influence the price.

Size of the Area: The larger the area to be covered, the higher the overall cost. However, buying in bulk for a large area can sometimes reduce the cost per square metre.

Type of Turf: There are various types of artificial turf designed for different purposes, such as landscaping, sports fields or pet areas. Each type has different pricing based on its specific features and intended use.

Installation Costs: Professional installation can add significantly to the overall cost. This includes ground preparation, laying the turf and adding infill materials. DIY installation can reduce costs but requires time and effort.

Additional Features: Costs can also vary based on additional features like UV protection, padding for extra cushioning and the type of infill used.

Maintenance Equipment and Materials: While generally low-maintenance, some artificial turf may require occasional brushing or washing, and specialised equipment can add to the cost.

Geographical Location: Prices can vary depending on where you live due to factors like shipping costs, availability of materials and local labour rates.

Conclusion

Artificial turf presents a practical and aesthetically pleasing alternative to natural grass, offering durability, low maintenance and year-round greenery. While the initial cost varies based on quality, size and installation, the long-term benefits of water conservation, an allergen-free environment and reduced upkeep make it a worthwhile investment.
